Reading a price chart and VWAP

Learn candle prices, volume and VWAP with a hands-on weighted-average calculator.

What does the overview show?

A candle records the open, high, low and close for one interval. Green means the close is above the open; it does not mean the next candle will rise. VWAP weights prices by trading volume: larger trades have more influence on the average.

Try it with your own numbers

Local calculation only. These inputs are illustrative, not live quotes. Nothing you enter is uploaded.

Worked example

100 shares at $10 and 300 shares at $12 produce a VWAP of $11.50, not the simple average of $11.

The calculation

VWAP = sum(price × volume) / sum(volume)

Method and references

Arithmetic is shown above so you can reproduce the result. Indicator background: J. Welles Wilder, New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems (1978); John Bollinger, Bollinger on Bollinger Bands (2001). These references explain methods, not a claim that TickSPY predicts prices.

Exercises use the values you enter, not a hidden market feed. Examples demonstrate mechanics; they are not evidence of profitability. Reviewed October 11, 2026.

What this cannot tell you

The desk estimates bar-level VWAP using (high + low + close) / 3. It is not a reconstruction of every trade. IEX-only volume excludes other exchanges.
